CONDITION ASSESSMENT OF UCT'S UPPER CAMPUS STRUCTURES
METHOD
Condition assessments of reinforced concrete structures are carried out using a number of simple and standard steps.
The first step in any condition assessment is a visual survey, which is used to identify any defects in the structures. Once the defects have been identified, several non-destructive tests can be performed to obtain further information regarding the extent and cause of the damage.
Once the cause and extent of the damage have been determined, an appropriate repair strategy can be developed that includes finding the appropriate material for the repair and ensuring that the damage does not occur again.
The repair strategy also considers the optimal time to perform the repairs based an estimations of the remaining service life of the building. Once the repair strategy has been determined, the cost of the repairs can then be estimated.
