CONDITION ASSESSMENT OF UCT'S UPPER CAMPUS STRUCTURES
A visual survey was carried out on the reinforced concrete structures of UCT's Upper Campus. The visual inspection identified four structures that showed severe signs of damage. These structures included Leslie Commerce, Leslie Social Science Building, Sports Science Centre and the Humanities Graduate School Building. These four structures were the focus of the condition assessment.
OVERVIEW OF RESULTS
LESLIE COMMERCE
LESLIE SOCIAL SCIENCE
Leslie Commerce is one of the most deteriorated structures on campus. It suffers from severe plaster delamination and spalling concrete. Falling plaster can result in serious injury if it were to fall from the building, making the loose plaster and the immediate area of the building unsafe.
Leslie Social Science displayed a similar deterioration mechanism to Leslie Commerce, although the effects are less severe. Similar cases of plaster delamination and spalling concrete were identified on the building, creating the same issues as Leslie Commerce
HUMANITIES GRADUATE BUILDING
SPORTS SCIENCE CENTRE
The Sports Science Centre shows extensive signs of carbonation induced corrosion. This has resulted in loose and missing concrete with exposed reinforcement on several components of the building . This has a severe effect on the aesthetics of the building, which is compounded by the slate panels that are currently missing from the building.
The Humanities Graduate Building is in the early stages of the corrosion mechanism. Although the building is currently showing minor signs of deterioration, further damage is likely to occur in the future unless action is taken.
