Soil reinforcement has been used for thousands of years to strengthen and stabilize soil so as to prevent structures from failing. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of high density polyethylene strips, sourced from used plastic shopping bags, as a reinforcement material.

This was assessed by analyzing the effect on the shear strength of a fine-grained cohesive soil due to the inclusion of shredded and perforated HDPE strips.

A series of laboratory direct shear box tests were conducted on District Six Clay to determine the extent of the plastic strips reinforcement properties.
